About This Calculator

A free, accurate and up-to-date inheritance tax calculator built for UK residents.

What This Tool Does

This calculator estimates the UK inheritance tax (IHT) liability on an estate based on current HMRC rates and thresholds. It takes into account the standard nil rate band (£325,000), the residence nil rate band (up to £175,000), transferable allowances from a deceased spouse or civil partner, the impact of gifts made in the last seven years, and charitable donations that qualify for a reduced IHT rate.

How We Keep It Accurate

Thresholds and rates are reviewed at each new tax year and updated to reflect the latest HMRC guidance. The nil rate band (£325,000) and residence nil rate band (£175,000) have been frozen since 2020 and remain unchanged through 2025/26 and 2026/27 — the government has confirmed this freeze continues until at least 2030. The standard IHT rate is 40%, reduced to 36% when 10% or more of the estate is donated to charity. The RNRB taper threshold is £2 million.

Important Disclaimer

This calculator provides estimates for general information purposes only. It does not constitute financial, legal or tax advice. Inheritance tax rules are complex, and your actual liability will depend on your specific circumstances — including the precise nature of assets, reliefs available (such as Business Property Relief or Agricultural Property Relief), domicile status, and any deeds of variation executed after death.

We strongly recommend consulting a qualified solicitor, financial adviser or tax specialist before making estate planning decisions. You can find regulated advisers through the FCA Register and solicitors through the Law Society.
